Parenting is probably one of the toughest jobs that one can acquire--yet rewarding. Right at the moment that you give yourself a pat on the back for a mission accomplished...a new challenge arises because.... kids CHANGE.

From my experience of working with many families, I've found that most parents are aware of bad patterns, however, they do not know where to intervene. Whether getting into a power struggle with kids to complete tasks, fixing multiple meals to satisfy the finicky eater, or standing guard at night to get your kids to sleep (in their on beds); parenting can be exhausting.

What is a

            Family Coach?

A family coach:

  • is a professional who helps promote better family relationships among parents and children.

  • gives customized support and advice based on each individual family’s needs in-person, by phone, Skype, or email.

  • addresses issues such as “disrespectful” behavior, power struggles, discipline, parental frustration, homework challenges, chores, problems with morning/night routines and transitions, and hostile family communication.

  • assists parents in creating parent-family plans (PFP) and then supports the parents as they practice these plans.  Because children and families can be complex, the family coach helps the parents problem-solve as challenges arise.

  • is different from family therapist.

As a family therapist (e.g. intensive in-home counselor and multi-systemic therapy (MST) therapist in Virginia and New York City, respectively), therapy typically consisted of connecting manifestations to past experiences and bringing “closure”. Likewise, therapy uses diagnoses and lasts weeks to years.   Family Coaching deals with the present, looks to the future, seeks to educate, and does not use diagnoses (instead, I look at problems that can be solved through behavioral changes).  Family coaching draws from current research in child and family development, family studies, and psychology to assist you with gaining the skills you need to parent your child and create harmonious family dynamics.

What signifies a good

             Family Coach?

A good family coach:

  • has an educational background in child development, families studies, and/or psychology as well as a Master’s degree or Doctorate in counseling, therapy, social work, or psychology.

  • continues their education and certification in fields related to enriching the family.

  • has hands-on experience working with children and parents, such as being a family therapist, child therapist, a schoolteacher, or parent educator.

  • is an excellent and judicious listener.

  • has ability to work with diverse families, i.e. marriages, unions, cohabitations, single parenting, divorce parenting, and varying parenting styles.

  • is attune to biases and deals with them before entering the coaching relationship.

  • meets you where you and your family are…. right here, right now.

  • promotes change through education and sound, tried-and-true strategies.

  • develops tangible and measurable goals for the parents to work toward and achieve.

  • knows her expertise and will not engage work that beyond her scope.

  • does not pathologize (diagnose) family members; I will explore behavioral patterns and help you to change those patterns.

Parenting Wisdom

I have always had a passion for working with children and families; whether working as Program Director for KinderCare Learning Centers or working with families dealing with severe problem behaviors as multi-systemic therapy (MST) therapist for Brooklyn Family Court .  With each career choice, I have gained more knowledge about children, parenting, and my desire in this field. As a family coach, I walk side-by-side with parents who are stressed, struggling or feeling alone.

I am currently working on my dissertation in fulfillment of a doctorate of counseling psychology with an emphasis in child and adolescent studies.  I hold a bachelor of science in Child and Family Development and master of science in Counseling Psychology.
